James Victor (Vic) Howarth, born 30 March 1930 in the house in Priest Lane Cartmel where again he lives at time of interview.  Irini Tzortzoglou and John Batty recorded 2 interviews with him on 30 January 2016 (58 minutes), and 6 February 2016 (50 Minutes).

In the first interview, he mentions how his father came to Cartmel after WW1 as a rating and valuation officer (collecting local authority rates); description of Cartmel Primary School with names of his teachers and school friends; details of old children’s games called Nerky and Guinea Pig; description of the Institute as a working mens’ club; descriptions of some former shops in Cartmel; war time memories, including finding unexploded incendiary bomb on Hampsfell; nick-names for the four pubs in Cartmel; history of his house, Croft House, in Priest Lane.

In the second interview, he mentions memories of his time at Ulverston Grammar School, subsequent graduation from UCL with degree in physiology and then career with Marine Biological Laboratory in Plymouth; memories of playing for Cartmel Cricket Club and explanation of the title of the book about the club called ‘B’twixt Cock and Fairy’; memories of evacuees in Cartmel during WWII and other local war time organisations; further memories of former shops in Cartmel; memories of a boxing club in Cartmel, several articles written for the parish magazine, and that the local river once had salmon and eels.

Second Interview 06/02/2016:

Mary Martin was born in 1916.  In this 37 minute interview she talks about her early life in Salford and then her Land Army posting, training in the Cartmel Fell area and then working in Major Dixon’s Greenbank farm, doing office work, milking cows and delivering the milk in Cartmel after learning to drive.  She talks about living in Longlands owned by Major Dixon and managed by Roy her husband,  her B&B business at Greenbank, rationing and shopping as well as the visitors at the B&B including the interviewer.

Bernard Edward (known as Freddie) Perry, born 17 December 1922, lived in Cartmel since 1973.  Interviewed  by Irini Tzortzoglou and John Batty for 45 minutes. Interview principally concerns his experience as a church warden of the Priory from 1987, including church warden’s duties, comments on known vicars and involvement in their selection, preparations for 800^th anniversary, planning and replacement of the bell frame, notes on bell ringing (when and how), changing fashions in the congregation, his hobby of collecting old post cards of Cartmel.

In this one hour and seventeen minute long interview, Joyce gives an informative account of what life was like in Cartmel during her childhood which coincided with the WW1.

Joyce Penelope Juliana Smith was born on Walney Island in 1909 and came to Cartmel in 1910 when her vicar father came to the Priory.

Joyce recalls structural changes to the Priory church,  division between the ‘gentry’ and the village people to the point where she was discouraged from playing with the village children and talks about trades people, shops at that time and the topics of crime, health, fuel and lighting and entertainment and leisure.

Alex (ina) was born in Flookburgh in 1921.  In this 46 minute interview, she talks about her memories of childhood, her education (initially with a governess and later on  at the George Watson Ladies College in Edinburgh) and the army where she served as did her father and two brothers.  Alex was stationed in a platoon on Salisbury Plain which was commanded by Dr Tennant’s daughter from Grange initially as assistant cook and then office worker and later still as officer in the A.T.S training recruits, supervising groups of girls in various locations and navigating road convoys from Newcastle to the South Coast. She also attended Emergency College at Bognor Regis and recalls poverty and hanger in that period.  Alex also speaks of her current involvement in educating and public speaking as well as her relationship with the church.
